A Letter to New Years

Standard

Dear New Years,

New Years, we have a complex relationship as you know. I used to be excited by the new  year, a new number, a new month… but right now I would rather ignore your existence, I’d rather ignore that this is a special occasion, I’m ignoring that people are partying tonight as I never really have much to do at this juncture.happy_new_year_2015_hq

But moving on from the fact of the event itself, moving into the New Year is scary. I have to leave behind the joy of Christmas and return to school, to work, where I can see only coursework that needs to be finished and exams that need to be sat and for neither I am ready. The new year brings the end of an era as I ready myself to leave my school and my friends and embark on that new ‘adventure’ called University.

It is always a bittersweet time as we transition from what we are used to into something new and unknown. This coming year is going to be extremely bittersweet and so as I come to January 1st I fear what I know is coming and hope that some goodness comes from what I don’t know is coming.

Although I step unwillingly to the New Year, I feel a slight excitement for all the good that I’m sure is to come. New Years, I hope you can give everyone the happiness that they deserve.

Ps. Hello! As with my Dear Christmas post, I wrote this in a very short period of time. I just tried to get my thoughts down and I know this isn’t written particularly well but I felt like I needed to post something a little more personal, a little bit more appropriate for this time. I want to wish you all a Happy New Year!

Music: McBusted (McFly+Busted)

Standard

Today I’m recommending my absolute favourite band McBusted. You may not have McBusted_Albumheard of them as they are a British band who mostly tour around England, Scotland and Ireland. They have been a band for a little over a year and have a MASSIVE following since they are a combination of two former bands, McFly and Busted.

MAIN-McBustedBusted broke up around 10 years ago after being one of the most popular bands in both England and America at the time. They managed to realise two albums and consisted of Matt Willis, James Bourne and Charlie Simpson. The band broke up when Charlie realised he wasn’t enjoying being in the band and he decided to pursue his career in a different band, Fightstar. Charlie now works on his solo career and so has decided not to be a part of McBusted.

Having always worked closely with Busted, and its members, McFly are similar in their approach and style of music. They have been a band for little over 10 years, they haven’t ended or broken up, they have only put their music on hold while McBusted is doing it’s thing since this opportunity came about rather suddenly and they couldn’t miss it. They McBusted-supporting-One-Directionwere my favourite band prior to McBusted and are made up of Danny Jones, Tom Fletcher (whose YouTube channel I recommended last week), Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd.

When James, Matt, Danny, Tom, Harry and Dougp01lnxv7ie announced that they were forming McBusted they released their first tour fearing that very little would happen and that people wouldn’t want to see them. Instead their shows sold out in the first few hours and all subsequent shows since have sold incredibly fast too. What was thought to be a stand –alone tour has turned into an album and a second tour thus far. So due to the demand and success of the first tour, the boys  have just RB-McBusted_blogreleased their self-titled debut album (on the 1st December 2014) which probably holds some of their best music to date, and have been promoting that this past month. Next they’re going on tour this spring, in March and April, showcasing their new album and some of the McFly and Busted classics.

If you haven’t heard either of the three bands I have mentioned in this blog post, please check them out as they have created some really great music and in addition are some of the most down-to-earth people in this planet. Also, even though Charlie Simpson isn’t a member of McBusted, don’t neglect to take a look at his solo stuff and his Fightstar stuff.

Ps. I must apologise for not posting last Friday (Boxing Day) since I didn’t have anything to post and I sort of ran out of time. Sorry! Hope you had a great Christmas!

A Letter To Christmas

Standard

Dear Christmas,

It is almost that time when we greet each other again. People believe that you are Santa, Father Christmas, St. Nicholas, whichever name the man in a red suit goes by but I don’t cool-fireplacesbelieve that he is you, rather, I believe he is only a part of the wonder that is Christmas.

Christmas, you can be seen in each and every person who smiles this time of year, whose face lights up with joy at the sight of fairy lights, or with the smell of pine needles. Every person who chooses to embrace this season for its simplest things shows the true meaning of Christmas.

Dear Christmas, I see you as a time for forgetting what might stress me, for forgetting those responsibilities that get me down. Christmas, you allow me to be happy just because I can be, just because the calendar reads December. Christmas, you give me cheer in many forms this time of year; through music, film, food, through a way of living. Christmas, you give a burst of positivity after yet another tiring year, you remind me to reflect and be thankful for all the good that I have seen and felt. Christmas, you remind me to show the ones I love that I love them and that is why you are so important.

Thank you for always picking me up at the end of every year, thank you for giving people a reason to be happy. Thank you for giving me a reason to be happy.

Merry Christmas.

Film and TV: Top 5 Christmas Films

Standard

With each Christmas comes the same classic Christmas films. Unfortunately I’m not well-versed in Christmas films and I haven’t watched many more than the ones listed below, despite this I am 100% recommending these and urge you, 13475439681if you yourself aren’t well-versed in Festive Films, to watch them all.

Home alone (1990) – A film about a kid who gets forgotten by his family when they go on their Christmas Vacation. Being left was not the worse that could’ve happened to Kevin since he got to watch whatever TV he liked, eat whatever he wanted and he had an entire large house to himself to run around in. It’s the most fun he’s ever had, that is until a couple of burglars decide they’re going to rob his house on Christmas Eve, while the rest of the family is still away. 11174490_800

Scrooged (1988) – A fairly overlooked film, Scrooged is a wonderfully beautiful modern re-imagining of the wider known A Christmas Carol/Scrooge. Bill Murray’s character Frank treats people terribly, he’s not very postive, kind or loving. He expects his PA to work over Christmas and doesn’t pick a particularly nice Christmas gift for his brother. It takes a visit from The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present and The Ghost of Christmas Future for Frank to realise what he’s been doing wrong. It truly is a spectacular Compositefilm and it’s probably my favourite Christmas film.

The Holiday (2006) – A typical holiday Rom-com, yes. I remember finding this film while I was flicking through my TV channels one night and I instantly fell in love. I think this film is great and has great actors in it. The plot follows two women who are struggling in their romantic and work lives. They each feel the need for a change over Christmas and on a house-sharing website they swap houses over the holidays. Each find wonderful new people in their new surroundings and some of the characters even find true love. White_Chrismas_film

White Christmas (1954) – As I said, I’m not well-versed in Christmas films and so I have to admit White Christmas is the only older Christmas film I have watched. I have only watched this film twice and so I’m going to quote the IMDB description for it; ‘Having left the Army following W.W.II, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-nlO5GZTBlpv88TRf1IhtvRjgTsPand-dance act. When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, as the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General.’

The Santa Clause (1994) – This is one Christmas film I really want to watch again since I haven’t seen it in years, as a result I don’t remember the plot so well and so I will quote IMDB so that you gain a true understanding of it’s narrative; ‘Divorcee Scott Calvin is disgusted to learn that his ex and her husband have tried – and failed – to break it easy to their 6-year-old son Charlie that Santa isn’t real. On Christmas Eve, Scott reads The Night Before Christmas… then receives an unexpected visitor on his roof. When he’s startled by Scott’s calling out and falls, the Santa impersonator disappears, leaving only an 8-reindeer sleigh and a suit with instructions to put it on if he’s involved in an accident. Scott does, and is transported around the town dropping gifts through chimneys until he’s taken to the North Pole and informed by a group who claim they’re elves that he is now Santa. Charlie is proud of his dad’s new job, though Scott’s convinced it’s a dream. Until his hair turns white, his beard refuses to stay shaved, he gains weight inexplicably, even for his sudden love of junk food… Now he’s accepted it, there’s just one problem: how to keep it secret from his disbelieving family?’

Have a wonderful Christmas time!

Ps. The Nightmare Before Christmas is technically one of my favourite Christmas films too but I tend to keep it in my Halloween Tradition as opposed to my Christmas Tradition.

YouTube: Carrie, Tom and Gi Fletcher

Standard

tomToday, I’m recommending three youtube channels at once. ‘Why?’ you ask… because these three channels are very similar and because the three people are related and between them conduct the series ‘Dear Tom, Dear Gi, Dear Carrie’.

Tom Fletcher is an English musician from the popular bands, and my favourite bands, McFly and McBusted. His sister is Carrie Hope Fletcher and carrieshe became a fairly popular YouTuber and so, following in her footsteps, Tom started to update his YouTube channel regularly. Soon to join the YouTube bandwagon was Giovanna Fletcher, a published author, Tom’s wife and Carrie’s sister-in-law.

The three of them, in their ‘Dear…’ series, each post a video once a week updating each other on the events of their lives in the past week or two while asking questions to the other person. Tom usually talks about McBusted and life in a giband, Carrie usually talks about her job and the wonderful opportunities she gets through being both a YouTuber and a cast member of Les Miserables in the West End and Gi usually talks about writing, or being a mother.

Now individually, their channels are brilliant. I genuinely love watching their videos so much. All three of them are so down-to-earth and get to do these amazing things.

Tom Fletcher. Musician. His videos are usually sit-down vlogs but he also has built lego, drawn disney characters, sung covers both with Gi and on his own as well as follow-me-around vlogs on video shoots and days out with his son Buzz. Tom is also known for his viral ‘Wedding Speech’ video.

Carrie Hope Fletcher. Musician. Writer. Actress. Blogger. Vlogger. YouTuber. A very talented young lady, Carrie is not only a very successful YouTuber, she also plays one of the lead roles in Les Miserables as Eponine as her day job. She also is currently touring around the UK on ‘The War of the Worlds’ tour. In 2015, she realises her first book. Her videos include; sit-down vlogs, follow-me-around vlogs, music covers, booktube videos and tag videos.

Lastly, Giovanna Fletcher. Actress. Writer. Gi, like Tom, trained as an actor. Although, she really enjoys acting she found her forte in writing and she now has two novels and a novella to her name.

Check out their channels and enjoy!

Christmas: Top 5 Christmas Songs

Standard

With only 10 days until Christmas, I think its right to recommend my favourite Christmas songs. Of course, most, if not all, are very well known and have been playing on the radio for that past two weeks but I couldn’t not post about Christmas music since it’s a huge part of my Christmas festivities. Here are my top 5 songs and their videos (which believe you me were very difficult to pick):

Mistletoe and Wine – Cliff Richard

Last Christmas – Wham

All I want for Christmas is You – Mariah Carey

Do they know it’s Christmas? – Band Aid

I Believe – Robson and Jerome

Merry Christmas!
