Film: Mamma Mia

Standard

I recently watched Mamma Mia for the first time – a few years late, I know. The reason for this is purely because Colin Firth was in it and well, after watching him in Kingsman, I wanted to watch more of his films. I fell in love with the film almost immediately and regretted that I hadn’t an interest for it when it first came out.

mamma_mia_10First and foremost, Mamma Mia is a musical and has a great soundtrack. It is necessary to mention that Mamma Mia was a stage show before a film, and the soundtrack uses purely ABBA songs. The music was very cleverly interwoven into the plot. Each song suited the mood, feelings and content of the moment where they were sung.

The acting ability in this film is unbelievable. It has an incredible cast including; Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Stellan Skarsgard, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski.  Not all of the cast are great singers (Pierce Brosnan’s singing was cringey) but I kind of love it; I love that it gives an extra comical quality to the film and shows that the actors just went out and had some fun. Additionally, I was blown away by Meryl Streep’s performance who’s acting, even while singing, was brilliant and proved why she is as well famed as she is.

Finally, the plot itself was really quite clever, sometimes cringey – but in the best way – and light-hearted.  I thought the story was really really good. Here is the imdb summary: ‘Set on a colourful Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs. A young woman about to be married discovers that any one of three men could be her father. She invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna’ or her husband-to-be Sky.

If you haven’t yet seen Mamma Mia, you need to! I truly recommend it.

Music: Caro Emerald

Standard

Caro_Emerald_38286Recently brought to my attention by a friend, Caro Emerald is a Dutch pop and jazz singer. Her music and her style is very 50s and 60s in its approach. I really enjoy her music and I think this is because it resembles music from the 50s while including elements of a more modern style. In addition, the lyrics to her music, which you may expect to also resemble the 50s, are very modern and praise the independent women and are very feminist. The messages they promote I think are so important.

This is the ‘about’ summary from her YouTube Channel: ‘Full of songs about dancing, flirting and declarations of independence. Her smouldering vocals update the classic Americano sound with a contemporary sheen and suggestive lyrics over a melting pot of sounds and influences – yet the sound is entirely, inimitably that of an exciting new artist capturing hearts and minds across the continent’.

Please check Caro Emerald’s work out:

TV Show: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Standard

Buffy“In every generation there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.”

As you may know, if you’ve been following my blog for long enough, that I am a massive fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not only is it part of my childhood and something that I’ve grown up with, the show is something that I genuinely enjoy so much and has been my favourite TV show for the past five years.

In the last fortnight, Buffy celebrated its 18th anniversary since it started airing and although, it hasn’t aired a new episode since 2003, it is still one of the most popular shows out there. It is never too late to start watching Buffy since part of its likable quality is that it is relevant to all people, but this is especially true for teenagers. This is because the monsters, the vampires and all the troubles the characters endure are useful metaphors for the audience’s ordinary lives.

Additionally, Buffy uses a mixture of several genres (comedy, action, horror and fantasy), flawlessly to create not only an emotional rollercoaster but also amazing moments of humour when it is least expected.

The actors, no matter what they’ve done since, or what you may think of their acting now, buffy-season1were perfect while they starred in Buffy. They fit the characters so well, and I can safely say this after watching the original pilot episode in which Willow was played by a different actress. She just did not suit the role as well as Alyson Hannigan. In addition to Alyson, some other amazing actors in Buffy include: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Head, James Marsters, Emma Caulfield, Charisma Carpenter, Michelle Trachtenberg, Seth Green and David Boreanaz.

So that you can gain a better understanding, if Buffy is completely new to you, here is the IMDB summary: ‘’In every generation there is a chosen one… she alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.’ Buffy Summers knows this tale by heart, and no matter how hard she tries to be just a ‘normal girl’, she cannot escape from her destiny… Thankfully, she is not alone in her quest to save the world, as she has the help of her friends, the hilarious (and surprisingly quite effective) evil-fighting team called ‘The Scooby Gang’. Together, Buffy & co. will slay their demons, survive one apocalypse after another, attend high school and college… and above all, understand that growing up can truly be Hell sometimes… literally’.

Quote – Colin Baker

‘I’m an actor. If you had said to me before I started acting that I’d get two bites of the cherry – you would do things that people will remember forever like ‘The Brothers’ which I did in the ’70s and now ‘Doctor Who’ – I’d have been overjoyed and I still am.’

‘As any actor will tell you, the hardest thing to do is small parts, because you focus all your attention and concentration on that small part. When you’re playing the lead part, you don’t have time to think about the whole of it, so you just have to steam on and get on with it.’doctor-who-colin-baker

‘One way of watering down the effects of violence is to approach it in a more light-hearted way. I don’t mean to say that you laugh when somebody has their arm sawn off, but you can diffuse fear with humour.’

‘I could, I think, quite easily have gone to Oxford. I got four good A levels, but my father’s income was such that I wouldn’t have got a grant, and he wouldn’t let me go to university, and that was the end of it.’

‘I’ve mellowed quite quickly.’

‘If you turn down work because you are frightened of getting typecast, you’ll never do anything good.’

Other: Nomination Charm Bracelets

Standard

Today I want to recommend something a little different: IMG_0460jewellery. I was recently given a NOMINATION charm bracelet for my birthday which I was allowed to choose and it was something I had wanted.

I’m recommending this bracelet in case you want an alternative to, for example, Pandora charm bracelets. I do like Pandora bracelets to a certain extent but I felt that if my parents were going to spend money on a piece of jewellery for me, I would much prefer a simpler style so that I could wear it everyday and be able to remember my birthday through it.

NominatIMG_0455ion is an Italian brand and the charms are available to order from several online stores and high street stores such as John Creed, Joshua James and Stanley Hunt.

To be honest, the aim of this post is only to raise people’s attention to another charm bracelet as it is as widely advertised as othIMG_0456er brands are. I like both Nomination and Pandora and I think charm bracelets are really good presents which can be built upon and hold a lot of meaning. With that thought, I’ll post some pictures here of my own bracelet as it is at the moment so that you can get a feel for what it looks like.

PS. I just wanted to let you guys know that I won’t be posting for the next two weeks as I have once again run out of content. Hopefully this break will give me something new to recommend. I apologise for the inconvenience.

‘It’s good as an artist to always remember to see things in a new, weird way.’tim-burton-and-johnny-depp-alice-in-wonderland-2010-11557743-800-9971

‘I’ve always been misrepresented. You know, I could dress in a clown costume and laugh with the happy people but they’d still say I’m a dark personality.’

I have a problem when people say something’s real or not real, or normal or abnormal. The meaning of those words for me is very personal and subjective. I’ve always been confused and never had a clearcut understanding of the meaning of those kinds of words.

‘One person’s craziness is another person’s reality.’

‘It’s hard to find logic in things sometimes. That’s why I can’t analyse things too much, because it often doesn’t make much sense.’
