TV Show: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Standard

Buffy“In every generation there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.”

As you may know, if you’ve been following my blog for long enough, that I am a massive fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not only is it part of my childhood and something that I’ve grown up with, the show is something that I genuinely enjoy so much and has been my favourite TV show for the past five years.

In the last fortnight, Buffy celebrated its 18th anniversary since it started airing and although, it hasn’t aired a new episode since 2003, it is still one of the most popular shows out there. It is never too late to start watching Buffy since part of its likable quality is that it is relevant to all people, but this is especially true for teenagers. This is because the monsters, the vampires and all the troubles the characters endure are useful metaphors for the audience’s ordinary lives.

Additionally, Buffy uses a mixture of several genres (comedy, action, horror and fantasy), flawlessly to create not only an emotional rollercoaster but also amazing moments of humour when it is least expected.

The actors, no matter what they’ve done since, or what you may think of their acting now, buffy-season1were perfect while they starred in Buffy. They fit the characters so well, and I can safely say this after watching the original pilot episode in which Willow was played by a different actress. She just did not suit the role as well as Alyson Hannigan. In addition to Alyson, some other amazing actors in Buffy include: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Head, James Marsters, Emma Caulfield, Charisma Carpenter, Michelle Trachtenberg, Seth Green and David Boreanaz.

So that you can gain a better understanding, if Buffy is completely new to you, here is the IMDB summary: ‘’In every generation there is a chosen one… she alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.’ Buffy Summers knows this tale by heart, and no matter how hard she tries to be just a ‘normal girl’, she cannot escape from her destiny… Thankfully, she is not alone in her quest to save the world, as she has the help of her friends, the hilarious (and surprisingly quite effective) evil-fighting team called ‘The Scooby Gang’. Together, Buffy & co. will slay their demons, survive one apocalypse after another, attend high school and college… and above all, understand that growing up can truly be Hell sometimes… literally’.

TV: Top 5 Favourites

Standard

This week I don’t just want to rave about one TV show, so here are my top 5 favourites of right now:

1. NCIS

My entire household loves NCIS, that’s me, my parents and my granddad, and a lot of my friends also watch NCIS avidly. ncis-cast-featuredWe’ve been watching odd episodes here and there on several TV channels  and now my Dad has recently purchased Seasons 1 – 8 on DVD so that we can finally watch them in order. I think one reason why the show is so good is because of its characters; their relationships are what keep the audience interested after all.

2.Death_in_Paradise_series_3___what_did_you_think_ Death in Paradise.

This is a brilliant BBC One show. It’s set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint-Marie and is currently into its fourth season. The show follows the islands police and homicide detectives who solve various dghmurders. Again, I think the characters are what keep the audience watching.

3. Suits

This show is so flawlessly put together with an amazing cast displayed so stylishly that it’s hard not to be enthralled in it. It is a very popular show but if you are in the minority and don’t know what it’s about, it follows corporate lawyer Harvey Specter and his relationship with fraudulent lawyer Mike Ross.

4. Happy Endings.happy-endings-abc

I feel like this show has been underrated and thus only spanned three seasons from 2011 until 2013. It is staged alike popular shows such as Friends, and How I Met Your Mother, with a cast of six friends following their various relationships and comic problems. I enjoy thisBuffy-the-Vampire-Slayer-buffy-the-vampire-slayer-182338_446_600 show so much and as thus have been trying to buy the seasons on DVD.

5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

My final recommendation today is, of course, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I couldn’t not mention Buffy as it will always be my favourite TV Show. Although it has been little over a decade since Joss Whedon ended the series, it is never too late to start watching it. I remember when I was a lot younger, that I watched Buffy with my Dad but I was too young to fully comprehend what I was actually watching. So, when my Dad bought the series, I started to watch it all in order and fell in love with it. I love the concept and the characters and I just think it’s a seamless mix of horror and comedy with that ninety’s/noughties feel and for me it’s the perfect show.

Other: FunkoPop!

Standard

1cbd_funko_pop_ghostbustersThis is a slightly different, and shorter, recommendation today, but I want to talk about FunkoPop! Figures.

Funko is an American company which was founded in 1998 to make pop-culture toys. They make a huge range of varying figures of many different characters from pop-culture over the years such as Ghostbusters, Batman comics, The Walking Dead, Zelda, Ace Ventura, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Chucky, Elvis, 517Lo5E2uGL._SX300_Doctor Who, Back to the Future, Toy Story, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Monsters Inc.… There are so many from all sorts of TV shows, games, films and even some celebrities.

I’ve been interested in these figures for a little while now ever since I’ve seen them featured in many YouTubers’ videos and also at my local HMV store. The reason why I’ve been looking on the internet for them recently is because I’m hoping to finally buy one of these figures for my birthday, as a small treat to myself I suppose.Funko-POP-Disney-Sally-Vinyl-Figure

Some of the ones I want are: Groot (From Guardians of the Galaxy), Robin (Batman and Robin), Bernadette (The Big Bang Theory), Jack Burton (Big Trouble in Little China), Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Pooh (Winnie the Pooh) and Elsa (Frozen). During writing this post, I have even found a range of Johnny Depp characters that I would also like such as Captain Jack (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Edward Scissorhands.

Places where I have found to buy them online are: www.forbiddenplanet.com, www.amazon.co.uk/www.amazon.com and of course, http://funko.com/.

Books: 5 Random books

Standard

For today’s book recommendation I, once again, grabbed five random books from my bookcase…

9781906772352.225x225-75Number One

James Bond: Goldeneye by John Gardner

I’m a fan of James Bond. I love the whole atmosphere around it, I love its concept and I love its ability to engage anyone. I picked up this book because of all of this and although I haven’t yet read it, I’m sure it’ll be brilliant even if it is not written by the original author, Ian Fleming, who of course was the genius behind it all. Gardner has written fifteen Bond novels based on the script of the films. I can’t wait to read this one and all of the others!39-clues-cover

Number Two

The Maze of Bones – Book one of the 39 Clues series by Rick Riordan.

I absolutely loved this book when I read it, which I admit was a long while ago. The story is about Amy and Dan Cahill who after a relative’s death find a whole hidden world unravelling before them. They need to go around the world hunting for the 39 clues to find out exactly how powerful their family is. I bought this book not realising that it was part of an entire 10 book series and thus I got to the end of reading it only to find out I was being left on a cliff hanger. I finally bought the 2nd and 3rd books but I haven’t read them since I’m waiting until I have the entire series to read the first again and to continue the rest of the story. I’m sure I’ll enjoy the entire story when I finally read it.

In addition, this book series runs alongside a trading card game. It always confused me but I thought it was very cbooks_11ool. Perhaps if you are intrigued and purchase the series you’ll manage to understand it better than me, since trading cards were never my strong suit when it moved from collecting into playing.

Number Three

VIII by H. M. Castor.

‘Destined for GREATNESS… tormented by DEMONS.’

Another interesting book that I have not read and yet I believe will be good and quite interesting. I found this book in Aldi, it was £1.99, and I thought it looked good because I‘ve been studying Henry VIII and the Tudor period in my History A-level work. Since I can’t describe the book I’ll insert the blurb: ‘VIII is the story of Hal: a young, handsome, gifted warrior, who believes he has been chosen to lead his people. But he is plagued by the ghosts of his family’s violent past and, once he rises to power, he turns to murder and rapacious cruelty. He is Henry VIII.’13035

Number Four

Bleach by Tite Kubo (Volume 1)

About six years ago I was obsessed with the anime Bleach. I was introduced to it through friends who were equally obsessed and we all watched the episodes on YouTube. Soon enough we found other things to be obsessed with and I fell out of love with anime in general. But I still appreciate manga, the print version of anime. I enjoyed reading the Bleach manga, although I’ve only ever read or owned volume 1 and volume 4. I will try to quote the blurb here: ‘Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn’t change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family; but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Now a full-fledged Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits and, along with Rukia-who is slowly regaining her powers-it’s Ichigo’s job to protect the innocent from Hollows and help the spirits themselves BuffyNovelColl1find peace.’

Number Five

Buffy the Vampire Slayer by John Vorkholt, Arthur Byron Cover and Alice Henderson.

Stories – Coyote Moon, Night of the Living Rerun and Portal Through Time.

‘In every generation, there is a chosen one. A slayer destined to protect the human race. She alone must fight the demons of hell. She alone must risk her life to stop the spread of evil. Buffy is the chosen one.’

We all know Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favourite TV Show (or you should if you’ve been reading my blogs long enough) and so it was only natural that I would purchase this series of three BtVS novels. Each book has three stories within written by three different people. I think this first book is my favourite and I absolutely love the stories and of course I love the further development of my favourite characters. My only problem is that I wish these stories were made into episodes of the programme too.

The blurb for each story is: ‘In Coyote Moon, a typical night at the carnival becomes deadly as shape-shifters turn the amusement park into their own house of horrors. Buffy starts having past-life nightmares in Night of the Living Rerun, and must face her historic counterpart before the events of the past repeat in the present. In Portal through Time, Slayers over the centuries are in danger and Buffy must protect them in order to save her own life and legacy’.

Music: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel

Standard

Buffy Cd wholeI’m a massive fan of the TV Show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and somehow, I don’t remember how I got searching for it, I found the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Albums. There are three that I’ve found so far and they include music from the series, music that was played in the series and an official BtVS album.

I’ll list and explain the three albums I have here; they’ll be in the same order as the picture to the right.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once more, with Feeling

  • This album has the tracks from the Musical Episode (from Series 5) named, unsurprisingly so, Once more, with Feeling.
  • This episode was seen as brilliantly unique and remains one of Joss Whedon’s favourites.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Radio Sunnydale (music from the TV series)

  • This is the unofficial album collecting music from the show, namely music played as soundtracks and tracks played at the Bronze.
  • The music is very much 90s American, but I think for now I think the genre could be a mixture of alternative/punk/pop.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Album

  • This is the official album collecting music from the show, so practically the same as the above album as it also plays soundtracks and music from the Bronze and has a similar genre.
  • Both albums have different tracks.

It’s hard to talk about the entirety of three albums as brief as I’m going to, but I think these albums are unique and include a lot of music of which is probably unheard and is very much not mainstream. I found the music to be really good and I liked that the album has a lot of different tracks so that if you don’t like one, it doesn’t degrade the whole thing, because you can skip that song and find another you do like.

The final album I would like to mention is the Official ANGEL album (ANGEL: Live fast, Die Never) that takes the soundtracks and music from the Buffy spin off series ANGEL. Now this I don’t rave about so much because it is heavily soundtrack based rather than songs and that’s down purely to the tone of the show, it doesn’t have something like the Bronze. Despite this I have found there to be about four songs that I really like and that has fortunately made me pleased that I bought this album too.

Quote: Sarah Michelle Gellar

sarah-michelle-gellar-06 ‘Normal is such a hard word to use, because everyone’s idea of normal is different. Real is what the word is. I think you either live a real life or you live a weird celebrity pseudolife. I think I lead a really real life’.

‘Ultimately you want to do something in life that people will remember. And with Buffy, I did that. I don’t feel like I need to achieve something. I just do it because it’s fun. And that takes the pressure off’.

‘My biggest complaint is school when it’s Send-the-roses day. Somebody’s always left out. I always got roses, but I would give them to someone who hadn’t gotten any’.

‘I am militant about drugs. You want to do ’em? You’re out of my life’.

‘I don’t call myself a feminist because feminism has a negative connotation. It makes you think of women who don’t shave their legs. But feminism is not just about not being weak. It’s about being able to take care of yourself. Just because you might care about what you look like or what the opposite sex thinks of you, it doesn’t make you not a feminist, although it’s a word I hate. Do I consider myself a strong female individual? Uh-huh. Can I take care of myself? Yes.’

‘You’ll never know what you’re capable of if you don’t try’.

sarah-michelle-gellar-chanel-dinner-at-tribeca-hq-12-1500‘To me, the scariest elements of horror films are the things that could really happen. And what is more scary than high school? … What I like about the show [Buffy the Vampire Slayer] is that it reminds you it’s O.K. to be different. What people think isn’t necessarily true. If people walk away with half of that, we’ve done our job’.

‘I have good friends, gay couples, who’ve been together for 18 years. It drives me crazy that in the eyes of the law, their love isn’t acknowledged when I have girlfriends who have married four times by the age of 25’.

‘I think the best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten is to trust myself and go for my dreams. I got that from my mom’.

‘I love books. I’m constantly afraid we’re moving into this digital era where books are going to go away, and to me books are the basis to everything in life. Reading is how we function. It’s not just creative imagination and creative play, it’s how we function as human beings, as human adults, and if you can instil that at a young age then that’s a skill they’ll have for life’.

Buffy Quote‘The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live.’ – Buffy Summers

‘You know what? I was wrong. You are an idiot. My life happens to, on occasion, suck beyond the telling of it. Sometimes more than I can handle. And it’s not just mine. Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they’re too busy with their own. The beautiful ones. The popular ones. The guys that pick on you. Everyone. If you could hear what they were feeling. The loneliness. The confusion. It looks quiet down there. It’s not. It’s deafening.’ – Buffy Summers

‘Bottom line is, even if you see ‘em coming, you’re not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So, what are we? Helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come. You can’t help that. It’s what you do afterwards that counts. That’s when you find out who you are.’ – Whistler
