Tech: Top 5 Apps

Standard

Most people have smartphones and tablets now-a-days, so it’s only right to recommend some apps every now and then. These apps I all have on my iPod Touch and are available from the iTunes app store but they should all be available on android app stores too, such as Google Play.

#1 Social Media – Instagramapps

I love Instagram, it’s an easy and fun way to keep up with the lives of your favourite people and celebrities. Instagram allows people to post images and captions instead of text posts such as statuses and tweets as seen on Facebook and Twitter.

#2 Story-based Games – Runway Life

I’ve recently been playing this game and been loving it too much. In the game, you have started your own fashion company and are required to hire models, buy clothes, and design your studio to make a successful company of your own.

#3 Wellbeing – Calm

This app allows you to meditate by listening to a calming soundtrack and looking at a calming image either with or without instruction. I find this very useful just before I go to sleep to clear my mind and I think you’ll find it equally helpful, if you also have a mind that never shuts up.

#4 Community Social Media – Strawburry17

I love this app for it brings the Strawburry17 fandom together and allows the Strawburry17 audience to interact with all the SB17 team in one place.

Strawburry17 is a YouTube channel set up and run by Meghan Camarena, who works with a whole team of brilliant people to provide interesting and unique content. See her channel here.

#5 Time Wasting Games – White Tiles, 1010! And Magic Touch

Okay, I couldn’t pick between three games but hey, three for the price of one! White Tiles is a fast paced game based on tapping a black tiled moving screen. 1010! is a tactical game using ideas based on Tetris by clearing lines in a cube by placing different shaped tiles strategically. Magic Touch is a Nitrome game which involves tracing the lines or images seen in bubbles to pop said bubbles before they reach the bottom of the screen. All three are addicting and will make you and your friends fight for the best score.

YouTube: Strawburry17

Standard

tumblr_nm1vcj6Z2z1riibkgo1_500Today I’m recommending the YouTube Channel Strawburry17 for a second time (to see my first blog click here). This is because the channel has recently released new shows and new seasons of shows after an intense shooting block. Over the past few years Meghan, Strawburry17, has been working hard to make her main channel a high quality production with a whole team working behind the scenes to make her content as good as possible. With this new season of Strawburry17, the hard work has paid off, creating awesome and unique new shows.

New shows include: Appy Hour, Kawaii Cookin, Cooking, Something New and Kyoot Toy Show. Appy Hour is hosted by Meghan and her brother J.D. to recommend their favourite apps right now. Kawaii Cookin sees Meghan using really cool sets, found in Little Tokyo L.A, to make cute little key chains or sweets. Cooking sees Meghan make something cool and edible using a pop culture reference, such as Doctor Who, Inside Out and Nintendo, as her inspiration. Something New sees Meghan tested to try new foods, or new objects, that she has never seen before, as picked out by her production team. She has been seen to try different types of Kit Kats, frozen dinners, sriracha foods and disgusting looking canned foods. Finally, Kyoot Toy Show sees Meghan unbox or create certain ‘cute’ toys and sees her demonstrate their uses in a short skit.

Some examples are below:

Book: The Glam Guide by FleurDeForce

Standard

812wXX2k9+LYouTube and the YouTube culture has increased dramatically in the last two years with many popular YouTubers being accepted into mainstream entertainment. With this has come the opportunity for many individuals on the platform to write and publish their own books in conjunction to their channels.

Now being a fan of many YouTubers myself, I have bought and read the books of some of my favourite YouTubers. Today I’m recommending Fleur De Force’s The Glam Guide.

Fleur De Force, who I have recommended on my blog before, is a beauty and lifestyle blogger and YouTuber online. She posts videos on beauty products, tutorials, reviews and fashion on her main channel, daily vlogs on her second channel and recipes and cooking on her food channel which she does with her husband, Mike, in connection to Sainsbury’s.20150406_124010

From this, she decided to write a book with the main purpose to inform and teach people about make-up and her recommended techniques and tips. The Glam Guide goes through beauty, hair, fashion, travel, health and fitness, life, love, YouTube and blogging and is very much the epitome of Fleur and her presence online.

Having an interest in beauty is pretty much necessary as a reason to pick up the book but The Glam Guide offers a lot more than that. It includes first date advice, confidence tips and motiv54db5507ec92dation; it includes recipes for juices and smoothies and a section on dreams and what they mean. All of this was deeply interesting to me and I really enjoyed reading it. Additionally, being a massive fan of Fleur I enjoyed seeing her voice throughout and especially reading the note to her subscribers at the very end of the book.

I saw myself reaching for the book at every opportunity that I could. Part of this was because of Fleur’s voice throughout but also the overall care and attention that this book has been privy to throughout its making is just so evident and it means so much more to read it. I just think it is beautifully laid out and has incredible illustrations.

I hope you check out Fleur and her channels and if The Glam Guide appeals to you, that you check that out too!

Books and Reading: Letter to an Unknown Soldier

Standard

Today I’m not recommending a book, nor am I recommending a magazine. Today, I’m recommending a website, a website with lots of things to read and this is the 1418 website which is hSoldier Statueosting the Letter to an Unknown Soldier project.

This project was inspired by a statue of an unknown soldier in London’s Paddington Station to commemorate the 100th year Anniversary of World War One. The project asked for letters to be written to the Unknown Soldier but this was to be loosely followed with people writing to the soldier, from the soldier and some were just general ponderings. The project is now finished and the Unknown Soldier can no longer receive any more letters but all of the letters are now stored on the 1418 website creating a new kind of War Memorial. Letters will be shown on the website until 2018 when they will be transferred and stored in the British Library.

For a more in depth version of what I just said, here is some information from the website itself: ‘The website opened on the 28th June 2014, the centenary of the Sarajevo assassinations, and close at 11pm on the night of 4th August 2014, the centenary of the moment when Prime Minister Asquith announced to the House of Commons that Britain had joined the First World War. As the letters arrived, they were all published on the website and made available for everyone to read.

Letter to Unknown Soldier will be archived here, as part of 14-18 NOW, until 2018. After that, all of the letters will be archived in the British Library where they will remain permanently accessible online, providing a snapshot of what people in this country and across the world were thinking and feeling about the centenary of WW1.’

Many celebrities have taken part in the project such as Stephen Fry and our own Prime Minister, David Cameron. Not only that but many schools took part including my own, even I have taken part. I’ll enter my letter at the end of this blog post if anyone wants to read it. I then urge you to go over to the website and read some of the worlds’ letters.

Letter from an Unknown Soldier:

Tension has been building ever so slowly, as time goes on, the more we grow silent. There’s a chill in the air making everything feel unpleasant, the sinister wind is whispering tales to us from the future. I didn’t have any sleep last night, as the fear in my stomach fluttered, the anticipation numbs my thoughts, my very feelings. I haven’t eaten breakfast this morning, although I was served a hearty meal, I couldn’t eat a bite. I feel like a condemned man, awaiting the dark that’s inevitable. The others and I don’t bear to look into each other’s eyes for we do not know who will still be here in the coming hours. When the whistle blows, I may not be here either.

So this is my last goodbye I suppose, I hope my efforts and the efforts of my comrades do make a difference, that they’re worth it later tonight, worth it when the wars over, worth it in 100 years. Don’t cry, as I presume you already are, for I will finally be in peace, in my heart, as I won’t have to suffer the images of my friends, my brothers, dying… to finally see the end of the cries, the gunshots, to stop fearing death… it will be a great pleasure. When I’m in Heaven, I can once again enjoy the sweet sound of music, the taste of those boiled sweets, the baking you made for me the last time we spoke and I will once again be able to see my boys as they play football in the streets. I’ll forever be watching, my love.

Dear Mrs. Locke.
It is my painful duty to inform you that a report has been received from the War Office notifying the death of: Corporal Edward Locke, which occurred on the front lines.
By His Majesty’s command I am to forward the enclosed message of sympathy from Their Gracious Majesties the King and Queen, I am at the same time to express the regret of the Army Council at his passing in his Country’s service.
Any information that may be received as to the soldier’s burial will be communicated to you in due course. A separate leaflet dealing more fully with this subject is enclosed.
Will you also kindly accept my sincere sympathy and condolence in the demise of such a worthy citizen and heroic soldier. While one cannot too deeply mourn the loss of such a brave comrade and husband, I believe comfort can be taken in knowing that he did his duty fearlessly and well, and gave his life for the protection of his country.
Again extending to you my heartfelt sympathy.                                                                             Faithfully, Major General William Phelps.

I’m just an unknown soldier, going to die amongst other unknown faces, I know that. So remember, when you see an Unknown Soldier show him love for his name has already been forgotten… make sure his face isn’t.
