Book/Film: Me Before You

Standard

skshfsInvited by a friend to watch Me Before You, I went and watched this emotional film at the cinema a few weeks ago. Having not read the book, all that attracted me to the film was the trailer and the impending love story (I’m always a sucker for a love story). However, I did go home and order the book (which I finished reading today), but I would suggest reading the book first and not make the same mistake I did.

Starring a truly wonderful cast of Sam Claflin as Will, Emilia Clarke as Lou, Jenna Coleman as Treena, Matthew Lewis as Patrick, Charles Dance as Stephen Traynor, Janet McTeer as Camilla Traynor, Samantha Spiro as Josie Clark, Brendan Coyle as Bernard Clark, and Stephen Peacocke as Nathan, the film was set up perfectly. It is also pretty faithful to the book, hardly surprising when you consider that the author, Jojo Moyes, wrote the screenplay.

‘Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane. Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of color. And neither of them knows they’re going to change each other for all time’.

It’s a truly beautiful story, heartbreakingly emotional but also quite inspirational. The book and the film push the idea that life is meant to be lived and you should be grabbing every opportunity you can.

TV and Film: Doctor Who

Standard

dskjhfdToday I’m recommending Doctor Who once again, because yes, it’s that time of year. Doctor Who is back on our screens and well into its ninth series with only two or three more episodes to go.

Many people were unsure about Capaldi’s doctor last series, but I think he’s now well-adjusted and has settled into the role quite successfully. I love his unique relationship with his companion Clara, who keeps him balanced when he could quite easily go off on one or be mean or too extravagant.

The episodes this series have been quite incredible with interesting plots and characters. There have also been a lot of two-parters which is actually really good so we can gain more detail from each story. There have been ups and downs as you would expect with any good TV show and… there have been incredible speeches from both the Doctor and Clara.

I’ve been loving these episodes massive amounts so… If you’ve missed this series, or never watched Doctor Who, it is never too late to jump in and I hope you really enjoy it!

Film and TV: Doctor Who and Whocon!

Standard

Today I’m recommending two things… Doctor Who and Lincoln Whocon at The Ritz.Whocon Banner

Saturday 23rd August 2014. A very busy day. I attended Lincoln’s (in England) annual Doctor Who Convention and then got treated to Deep Breath, Episode 1 of Series 8 of Doctor Who.

ritzFirstly, Whocon was absolutely fantastic.  It was held at The Ritz Cinema and Theatre which is such a cool (and small) venue. The convention was worth every penny and more; I had a standard ticket which cost me £25 plus a booking fee. This was totally reasonable for everything that was involved and bearing in mind that the Ritz are trying to fundraise to continue refurbishing and repairing the venue and trying to restore it to it’s former glory, it’s very reasonable. So Whocon… From start to finish, I cannot express how brilliant everything was. Everyone from the guests to the Ritz staff were so kind, so nice and so genuine. They invited amazing guests including; Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Simon Fisher – Becker, Peter Roy, Frazer Hines (who actually lives 15 minutes away from me!), Nick Joseph, Nev Fountain, Terry Malloy and Colin Spaull. Part of the festivities was an incredible video with Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann with the event organiser Steve Healey, who also, as far as I know, organised the brilliant opening ceremony that actually made me emotional. Then there was a beautifully organised raffle and auction which were both made amazing from the prizes/items themselves (DW figures, signed photos, board games, DW Guitar signed by all the guests, a replica working light Handles, as a few examples) and Steve’s commentary during this was hilarious. I loved the impromptu joke session too with Steve and Colin Baker, which was amazingly informal and included everyone there! AMAZING. THANK YOU SO MUCH STEVE and the rest of the RITZ team!…. I think it is worth going to the Ritz because they’re doing a lot of hard work restoring a wonderful place and it’s so great to see and to support.

Doctor Who Series 8Now onto the exciting bit… DEEP BREATH has finally hit all of our screens! Don’t worry this will be brief and therefore contain no spoilers… well, not really. New Doctor, good. Scottish sounding Doctor, good. New Theme, good. Clara, good (we all have opinions on Clara’s character but I personally love her), Strax, Jenny and Vastra, good. This episode provided a good backdrop for the rest of the series, this is because it has set up a lot of puzzles and storylines that are to be explored and figured out during Series 8. It also sets up the further characterization of the Doctor and his companions and it definitely leaves us needing more. I can’t say much more before spoiling everything but if you haven’t seen it, WHY NOT? But go on, find the episode, watch it, love it like I did. It’s such a great introduction to the new series.
