TV Show: H2O (Just Add Water)

Standard

Emma_Cleo_Rikki_MermaidToday I am recommending H2O, a teen show that I originally watched on Nickelodeon when I was in secondary school. Having craved to watch the series in the correct order and all the way through I was glad to find it on Netflix. With all the extra time I found myself with as summer started (being at home away from university life) I managed to power through the three seasons that were made.

The show, while sometimes meant for a certain age group, is very engaging and even my mum, who is in her forties (let’s hope she doesn’t read this post and see that I have broadcasted her age on the internet), has enjoyed the show. Yep, it has a parent’s approval, a parent, might I add, who doesn’t much care for films and could, I’m pretty sure, live life without a television at all.

H2O is a show about mermaids and we follow three such beings from their magical creation in the pilot and see how they cope not only with their new powers and hiding their secret from the world, but also with the constant struggles that every teenager has to deal with: friends, boyfriends, school, family life and even the occasional part time job.

‘Three ordinary women discover an Island on Mako and a moon pool that turns them into extraordinary mermaids with special powers over water on the night of a full moon. They must never look in the moon’s eye or there will be side effects for each of them’.

YouTube: BBC Doctor Who

Standard

series-9-wallpaper-4x3This Wednesday I’m recommending the BBC’s Doctor Who YouTube Channel.

As you might know, if you’ve been on my blog long enough, I really love the BBC show Doctor Who, both old and new episodes.

Every week on this channel, there is a ‘Fan Show’ video hosted by Christel Dee. I love this show especially recently since they have been ‘reviewing’ the latest Doctor Who episodes. Christel, joined by Luke Spillane, and usually one or two other guests, discuss the events of the latest episode sharing their favourite moments, their theories and their anticipation for what’s to come. I find these videos very interesting.

Other videos shared on this channel include interviews with the cast, behind the scenes videos, introductions, teasers or trailers for the coming episodes, scenes from old and new episodes and the odd tutorial.

See below for a couple of the Doctor Who videos…

TV and Film: Gotham

Standard

545ddf9572315e8ee4634a61409644d5Today I’m recommending the TV series Gotham. It’s never too late to pick up a TV show especially this one as it’s only recently finished its first season rather successfully.

I began watching Gotham because I enjoy the whole Batman universe and I have done since watching the Tim Burton movies and the modern trilogy by Chris Nolan. Suffice to say I’m excited for 2016’s Batman Vs Superman.

The series has a really interesting context, acting as a prequel to the Batman story that pretty much everyone already knows. Since everyone already knows about Bruce Wayne’s upbringing and – SPOILER – his parents’ murders the show takes the interesting viewpoint of a Mr Jim Gordon. For those of you who don’t know, or have forgotten, Jim Gordon is a police acquaintance of Batman who always works on Batman/Bruce Wayne’s side.

So the series starts with Jim Gordon in his new role as Gotham Police Detective alongside his new partner Harvey. He sets out to rid Gotham of its corruption and its dishonesty but struggles against a city which is basically run by two sets of rich mobsters who have very serious and very violent rivalries.

Gotham shows the beginnings of other well-known Batman characters such as; Bruce Wayne, Scarecrow, The Joker, Cat Woman, Poison Ivy, Harvey Dent (Two Face), Ed Nigma (Riddler) and especially Penguin. However, even if you don’t know a thing about Batman you can still watch this show, seriously, you don’t need prior knowledge at all to understand the story lines or anything else.

The show has the format, which a lot of new US shows at the moment have, in that: a new case is brought about, say a murder, and is solved in each episode. This is very similar to Elementary, a relatively new show itself. These shows seem to be quite popular at the moment, so if you like that kind of show, Gotham has that element too.

It has come to my attention that the makers are going to be making a second series, which I’m really excited for  so that I can see how these characters develop more, despite the fact I know what they’ll ‘grow up’ to be from following Batman already.

If you like the sound of it, go check it out… and enjoy!

TV Show: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Standard

Buffy“In every generation there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.”

As you may know, if you’ve been following my blog for long enough, that I am a massive fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not only is it part of my childhood and something that I’ve grown up with, the show is something that I genuinely enjoy so much and has been my favourite TV show for the past five years.

In the last fortnight, Buffy celebrated its 18th anniversary since it started airing and although, it hasn’t aired a new episode since 2003, it is still one of the most popular shows out there. It is never too late to start watching Buffy since part of its likable quality is that it is relevant to all people, but this is especially true for teenagers. This is because the monsters, the vampires and all the troubles the characters endure are useful metaphors for the audience’s ordinary lives.

Additionally, Buffy uses a mixture of several genres (comedy, action, horror and fantasy), flawlessly to create not only an emotional rollercoaster but also amazing moments of humour when it is least expected.

The actors, no matter what they’ve done since, or what you may think of their acting now, buffy-season1were perfect while they starred in Buffy. They fit the characters so well, and I can safely say this after watching the original pilot episode in which Willow was played by a different actress. She just did not suit the role as well as Alyson Hannigan. In addition to Alyson, some other amazing actors in Buffy include: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Head, James Marsters, Emma Caulfield, Charisma Carpenter, Michelle Trachtenberg, Seth Green and David Boreanaz.

So that you can gain a better understanding, if Buffy is completely new to you, here is the IMDB summary: ‘’In every generation there is a chosen one… she alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.’ Buffy Summers knows this tale by heart, and no matter how hard she tries to be just a ‘normal girl’, she cannot escape from her destiny… Thankfully, she is not alone in her quest to save the world, as she has the help of her friends, the hilarious (and surprisingly quite effective) evil-fighting team called ‘The Scooby Gang’. Together, Buffy & co. will slay their demons, survive one apocalypse after another, attend high school and college… and above all, understand that growing up can truly be Hell sometimes… literally’.

Film and TV: New Girl

Standard

NEW-GIRL-POSTER_510I have been watching New Girl at every free moment I can. I watched it when it first aired and now have Season 1 and 2 on DVD. This show has great characters, great scenarios and a great concept. The concept is that one girl lives in a loft with three guys. Hijinks ensue.

The plot is described as follows (from google+): ‘After going through a rough breakup, awkward and upbeat Jess moves in with three single guys. Intelligent and witty Nick is an underachiever who took the bartender off-ramp on his road to success. Schmidt obsesses over his social standing and looks at Jess as a personal project. Winston is a competitive former athlete who, after realizing he will never become a pro, moves into the loft. Together with Jess’ best friend, Cece, they bond to form an unlikely, and dysfunctional, family.’

The show is so loveable because of these four people who live together and because each episode allows us to see their relationships develop and grow both with each other and with outside characters. Part of this comes from excellent actors such as; Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris and Damon Wayans Jr.

I am so obsessed, once again, with this show and I’m sad because I’m not watching the show right now!

Books: Serenity Graphic Novel

Standard

SerenityToday’s book recommendation is the Serenity: Those Left Behind graphic novel. This book belongs in the canon surrounding the wonderful TV show Firefly. For those that don’t know, Firefly was a TV show that ran from 2002 to 2003. It managed 14 episodes on FOX before it was cancelled. When the show was ended rather unfinished, Joss Whedon, its creator, decided to make a film to round it all off. This film was called Serenity after the ship Serenity of which the characters live and where most of the show was set.

Written by Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews this graphic novel contains a completely new story, never before seen, giving the firefly fans another chance to see their favourite characters; Mal, Zoe, Wash, Inara, Jayne, Kaylee, Simon, River and Shepherd in a new adventure. The graphic novel also has incredible art inside, based on the actors from the show, with whole page drawings.

I enjoyed the show and I enjoyed the graphic novel.
